Adventures with Ruth

Sunday, January 10, 2010 | |

Even though Gourmet Magazine shuttered with its last print issue in November of 2009, the brand continues to live on through some interesting programming choices online and on TV. I caught the last episode of Gourmet's Adventures with Ruth first season today on PBS. Part travelogue, part cooking show, Adventures with Ruth has the former Editor-in-Chief jetsetting to food capitols in Laos, Morocco, Mexico, the US and beyond. The episode I caught features the amazingly charming Jeffrey Wright and explores the culinary landscape of Jackson Heights, Queens with chef Julie Sahni. Not only do we get an insider's peak into the community, the restaurants, and the green market, but our guides introduce straightforward recipes to try out at home. In Brooklyn, you can catch the show next Monday, 1/11 and 1/18 at 7:30PM on WLIW Channel 21. Check the clip below.

I tried to watch it on ch 21 tonight at 7:30 but it was a different episode. Do you know when it will be on again, or what restaurants they went to in Jackson Heights?

Since its episode 10 and the last episode of the season maybe itll come on next Monday? I think the place i'd most like to check out is Rajbhog Sweets: Address: 72-27, 37th Ave. Sahni introduces Reichl and Wright to some sort of sweet and savory snack. Its a fried shell that you crack, fill with various fillings, and then dip into a sauce. She challenges her guests to put the whole thing in their mouths and it looks delicious. She also takes them to a huge indian grocery store and introduces them to a range of spices and veggies. imma try to check another episode this Sunday at 2PM.

Thank you! I think I know what dish you are describing. I only saw them eating it. Did it look like a clear/white dumpling that they dipped in a thin sauce then all started exclaiming about the overwhelming variety of flavors? Not the palette cleanser thing from the outdoor vendor that happened later on in the show.
