One of my favorite things I saw at Miami Basel was Brownbook, an urban lifestyle magazine that covers contemporary design, politics and creative culture coming out of the Middle East and North Africa. Based in Dubai, the beautifully printed and bound publication feels a little bit like Monocle with its layout but the coverage is more diverse ranging from Istanbul Design Week to Afghani indie rock. The current issue, Urban 50, is their annual survey of fifty unique people and ideas that are transforming the Middle East.
For our annual roundup issue, we’ve scoured the region for the people, ideas, places, businesses and buildings that we think are making the Middle East better today. In Brownbook 24, Our search has taken us to a Cairene radio station, to a college on the banks of the Red Sea, to a rundown area in Casablanca that’s had an injection of community spirit from a converted abattoir.
The coverage in Brownbook along with the NYTimes' recent feature on the many ambitious architectural projects in the Middle East gets me excited about visiting in the upcoming years. Check out the full NYTimes article here and Nicolai Ouroussoff's the accompanying video piece featuring IM Pei, Frank Gehry, Norman Foster and Jean Nouvel speaking about their individual museum projects in Abu Dhabi and Qatar.

VIBE Magazine Folds

Its been a rough week for Quincy -- first Michael passed and now Vibe has gone under. Thanks to a late nite taco run at La Esquina last nite, I was informed that Vibe Magazine, founder Quincy Jones' answer to a black Rolling Stone, has folded. Gawker has the full story here. In an interesting twist, NME.com reported today that Quincy Jones has plans to buy back the magazine he started in 1993.

Eat Me Daily is my new favorite blog/online zine that reports on great stories surrounding food and food culture. Stories from the world of science (astronauts drink their own pee!), cookery, art, and the commercial world (mexican dorito man, american beauty stylee) sit comfortably next to fun book reviews and insider industry gossip for foodies and followers alike. My favorite? Offal of the Week, hands down. Definitely a great link for the blogroll!
Rojo Magazine

ROJO Magazine is probably my favorite magazine that I've never actually seen. I stumbled upon their website on some sort of internet adventure and immediately signed up for their artspace newsletter that sends out info about upcoming exhibitions from their network of galleries around the world. Based in Barcelona but with outposts in Milan and São Paulo, they publish art books as well as their "world-class compendium textless art magazine" quarterly. You can pre-order the next ad-free issue here.

Yummy No.3
Monday, April 27, 2009 | Posted by Gwai Gwai at 1:55 PM | Labels: events, magazines, paris
With a passion for pre-packaged industrial food, Pascal Monfort and a crew of his creative friends working in art and fashion launched Yummy, a magazine celebrating food the way one might celebrate high fashion. With artful collages of fast food boxes and high fashion models sprinkled in candy-colored, well, candy, Yummy takes an entirely new perspective on fast food—“design, coolness, seduction, trends...all the ingredients for the creative industry.”
Celebrate the new YUMMY 3 with Pascal and Co. this Thursday!
