"I Heart" Black Spade

Friday, July 16, 2010 | |

Black Spade is one of my favorite people and an immensely multi-talented artist/producer/emcee. Check out this beautiful B+W video he created for his mixtape with Union LA, Build and Destroy. Its an amazing tribute to motown era style and sound. Download the mixtape here!

Vietnamese New Wave Party

Saturday, March 13, 2010

Growing up in Houston in the 80s you couldnt be chinese and not jam out to synthpop -- that special in-between genre combining top 40, electronic, and british angst lyrics. New Order, Erasure, Depeche Mode and Anything Box. The hair was big, the makeup was serious and the fashion was out of control! It looks like some Vietnamese kids from the group Keep on Music in LA are reviving the moment with an 80s revival costume party coming up on March 27th. The folks at Amoeba did a great interview with even better pictures. Check out the full coverage here. It really took me back to riding shotgun in a dropped Integra on my way to Rainbow Karaoke on Bellaire.

Thanks Catzie and Julie for the Lynda Dai shout!!!

Deitch...In More News

Thursday, February 18, 2010

And this piece of news I got while at the opening but was so shocked about it I felt like it deserved its own separate post. Last month Deitch announced that he will be leaving NYC to Direct the Museum of Contemporary Art in LA!! What will it all mean for New York City, New York Artists and his SoHo Wooster Space? NYMag's culture Vulture slices it up here.

Artist: Devin Troy Strother

Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Just popped by one of my regular blog destinations and was totally geeked to see the work of Los Angeles-based artist Devin Troy Strother. His multi-media works on paper address tell a story about contemporary issues of identity with sci-fi/comic book and pop cultural references. The multi-layered pieces marry elements of collage, colored paper cutouts, silk screen, cell vinyl, acrylic and more and remind me of the works of Romare Bearden. Thanks mylove!
