FYMW vs. GQ

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

I heart Fuckyeahmenswear. Will you be my valentine? GQ got an exclusive interview with the poet and critic here. Check it below:
GQ: Juelz Santana often brags on his Twitter: “I hopped up out the bed I don’t have to turn my swag on…it’s in my blood I don’t know how to turn it off.” But surely a dude has to spend some time and energy getting fresh in the morning, right? What’s the quickest and easiest way for a guy to turn his swag on?
FYMW: This all depends on how naturally crispy you are. Me, I don’t have to do shit, but that should be pretty clear at this point. The quickest and easiest way for your everyday wannabe herb? Read FYMW, obviously.
GQ: Should a man have any other hobbies besides looking fresh and blogging about it?
FYMW: Yeah, you want to diversify your activities. Throw in macking on bomb dot com broads and you’ve pretty much pinned down what I do on the reg.
GQ: What’s crispy in the streets these days as far as you’re concerned? Which brands are coming correct with the steez? Which are faking the funk?
FYMW: First off, can we officially dead “faking the funk” for good? I’m going on record, “fuck outta here with that bullshit”. I’ll say this, if you need to ask what’s crispy in the streets or who is coming correct with steez then there is a good chance you stay losing.
GQ: Any advice you can offer to aspiring menswear bloggers that want to get their follower, retweet, and @reply weight up?
FYMW: Quit. Just fucking quit. It was all over before it even began. FYMW killed your dreams.
GQ: Favorite Wes Andy movie? Least favorite?
FYMW: I only watch Face/Off. The epitome of steez is Nick Cage’s face. No homme-o.
GQ: Should a guy build an outfit around his Aldies or choose his Aldies based on his outfit?
FYMW: I caught my doorman wearing some Aldies—J. Crizzy collabs, natch—the other day so I’m officially off that shit. This F/W I’m wearing my Brooks Bro moon boots exclusively.
GQ: What’s your aim with FYMW? Are you here to “curate the curators”?
FYMW: Whatever I need to do to smash the game is what I does. End of story.

Oil + Water: Fashion or Fail?

Saturday, August 07, 2010

American fashion photographer, Steven Meisel turns his lens towards the tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico with his most recent spread for Italian Vogue. The fashion editorial features models dipped in black crude and sprawled across rocky coastline dressed in plummage and leather. There's been a lot of debate on whether the spread is in bad taste or not but we applaud his courage in fanning the outrage and keeping the debate in headlines about offshore drilling and America's addiction to oil. A great reminder that the whole world is watching the BP oil spill that is STILL spilling into the Gulf. -Thanks Rukhs!

NYC Premiere: Downtown Calling

Monday, July 26, 2010 | |

FINALLY!! This Wednesday my good friend Ben Velez's film, Downtown Calling, is making its NYC hometown debut. Chronicling the underground art, music and culture scene of New York during the late 70's and narrated by Deborah Harry, this film is an important document of the people and creative energy that birthed an undeniable NYC youth culture. The icons of Punk, Hip Hop, DJ and Downtown culture continue to influence the way we see and think about the world around us today! Buy tickets here and support the film at the NY International Latino Film Festival!

Black Coffee - South African Design

Tuesday, June 22, 2010 | |

Jacques van der Watt and Daniça Lep, the duo behind South African fashion label Black Coffee, are creating some of the most interesting and forward-thinking silhouettes. Using a mix of jersey and wool-blends for their Winter 2010 collection, the label put together an amazing installation/pop-up store at Arts on Main, a Johannesburg cultural compound located in the heart of the city. Avant-goth librarian describes the unique draping and playful use of print and layering. Check out some pics of the installation below, plus a video for their elegant concept dress which can be worn countless ways.

Hoodie Heaven

Thursday, March 11, 2010

I love the japanese carry-all cloths, furoshiki, and now the folks from Conceptual Devices have created the project, Just Undo It. Transform your hoodie from pull-over to backpack, computer case, or baby hammock with a few easy steps! thanks SwissMiss!

A hoodie is not just a hoodie. In a world full of stuff, smart items should be transformable, editable. They should engage the possibility to be transformed into something else. We do not need a new object. We rather need to get rid of some of them, to reduce the complex network of things around us. Just undo it is a collection of reversible objects that could be made from a hoodie at no cost.

Kehinde Wiley x Puma @ Deitch

Thursday, February 18, 2010

I stopped by Deitch on Wednesday to check out Kehinde Wiley's new collaboration with Puma. The opening drew a great cross-section of downtown heads, artists, and creatives from across the board including OG Chuck Close, Fab Five Freddy, Toure, Lainie Balby, Oscar Sanchez, and Raul (Hood by Air). Wiley's large scale portraits were on display as well as video content showing the backstory for his trip across Africa and interaction with the continent's biggest soccer stars. Check the video below. Rich Medina was on the decks and there was a special performance by Zozo Afrobeat.

To celebrate this summer’s World Cup in South Africa and PUMA’s long standing partnership with African football, PUMA has partnered with Kehinde Wiley, one of the world’s most sought-after artists, and commissioned him to create four original works of art inspired by three of football’s most decorated players. Wiley’s paintings, along with PUMA’s collection of lifestyle apparel, footwear, and accessories that incorporate his graphics — as well as the PUMA Africa Unity Kit — will be on display in NYC for a special exhibition at the Deitch Projects. Of The Same Earth, a film documenting Wiley’s experiences visiting these athletes in their home countries, will be screened throughout the exhibition.

PUMA-sponsored football stars Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon, John Mensah of Ghana and Emmanuel Eboué of Ivory Coast all sat for individual portraits plus a ‘Unity’ portrait with all three players together, symbolizing the united countries of Africa. In the ‘Unity’ portrait, the players are wearing the PUMA Africa Unity Kit, a special kit that is registered as the third kit for all PUMA-sponsored African football teams in 2010.

The exhibition is on a seven-country tour which started in Berlin in January and ends in South Africa in June during the World Cup. The exhibition also stops in Paris, London, Beijing, Milan, and Tokyo.

Gold Coast Trading Company

Sunday, August 30, 2009

Facebook is a strange and beautiful thing. A couple weeks back i was randomly "friend"-ed by Gold Coast Trading Company. A new line from Emeka Alams (formerly of 21MC), the transatlantic designer splits his time between Seattle and West Africa. Melding an interplanetary design sensibility with his life experience in both Nigeria and the US, Alams has set out to reshape the conversation about what constitutes African. He explains that, "it's not so much of rehashing slavery and rebelling, while slavery shaped our story it's not my history. I was tired of the same ol' hipster afro stuff I was seeing or the "Save Africa" tees. That has nothing to do with Africa or what's actually going on there. With Gold Coast Trading I'm just showing you the actuality of my Africa. Africa is more than just music and colors; it's so complex." Check the video inspiration from Gnarls Barkley for GCT's next season and peep the design jams below!

Coreen Simpson and The Black Cameo

Monday, May 18, 2009 | |

Photographer and accessories designer Coreen Simpson talks with The FADER about her new book, The Black Cameo in a great Q+A!

We first came across Coreen Simpson via her iconic collection of street style portraits of impossibly stylish black men and women on the NYC nightlife scene of the 1980s that we published back in FADER #33. Simpson also happens to have a good helping of style herself, working as a jewelry designer throughout her photography career. Her new book, The Black Cameo, pays homage to the accessories sensation she started back in the late '80s—chic black and white cameos with the profile of a black woman. Before her pieces, black images on jewelry of this kind were pretty much unheard of, and when her collection launched at the Studio Museum of Harlem there were literally hoards of women lining up to get them. We chatted with Simpson about her days street-vending on 57th street, about the origins of the cameo and why, in her opinion, personal style is the only thing that we really own.

Avedon Fashion @ ICP

Monday, May 11, 2009 | |

Avedon Fashion 1944-2000
15 May-6 September 2009
International Center of Photography

Richard Avedon (1923–2004) revolutionized fashion photography starting in the post-World War II era and redefined the role of the fashion photographer. Anticipating many of the cultural cross-fertilizations that have occurred between high art, commercial art, fashion, advertising, and pop culture in the last twenty years, he created spirited, imaginative photographs that showed fashion and the modern woman in a new light. He shook up the chilly, static formulas of the fashion photograph and by 1950 was the most imitated American editorial photographer. Injecting a forthright, American energy into a business that had been dominated by Europeans, Avedon's stylistic innovations continue to influence photographers around the world.

This exhibition will be the most comprehensive exploration to date of Avedon's fashion photography during his long career at Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, The New Yorker, and beyond. Working closely with The Richard Avedon Foundation, ICP curator Carol Squiers and guest curator Vince Aletti will present new scholarship on the evolution and extraordinary, ongoing impact of his work. The exhibition will feature more than 200 works by Richard Avedon, spanning his entire career, and will include vintage prints, contact sheets, magazine layouts, and archival material.

Thanks CoolHunting!

Ateliers Ruby x Maison Martin Margiela

Friday, April 24, 2009 | |

Parisian designer Jérôme Coste founded Ruby to solve the conundrum of being both safe and sexy. His beautifully crafted retro-chic cycling helmets use a carbon shell that is borrowed from aerospace technology with a signature ruby red nappa lambskin lining inside. For their third collaboration from the "Signature" collection, Coste teamed up with avantgarde fashion darling Maison Martin Margiela to celebrate the Antwerp line's 20th Anniversary. Margiela and his colleagues at 163 Rue St-Maur took the program title literally and each person placed his signature on the helmet to create a collective work. This limited edition collection will be sold at Colette.
