Tainted Love offers a view of activist art that questions the idea that direct action is the only effective form of politics. The exhibition takes its inspiration from political activity surrounding cultural production within the moment of AIDS activism, although the works represented are not strictly tied to AIDS.


Bushwick Open Studios is a self-organized art festival where anyone and everyone in the community is welcome to participate by presenting art work, organizing activities or helping to produce the event. The purpose is to create an open and inclusive event that benefits the entire community through the sharing of artistic projects and the encouragement of community interaction and dialogue.

BOS is an art festival centered around the open studios of local artists. Also included are myriad other platforms for exhibiting and celebrating the creative energy of Bushwick. Anyone in the community is welcome to participate by presenting artwork, organizing activities or helping to produce the event. BOS 09 will be the Festival’s 3rd year.

Folks in Prospect Heights have something to cheer about this rainy June week! The beloved pizzeria Franny's has opened up a prepared foods shop called BKLYN Larder. Check the Grubstreet review below:
In its five-year existence, Prospect Heights’s Franny’s has garnered a rabid following, but even its most faithful customers can’t subsist entirely on the restaurant’s clam pizzas, bucatini with ramps, and nettle crostini (no matter how hard we try). That’s why owners Andrew Feinberg and Francine Stephens have built Bklyn Larder, a specialty-foods shop opening tomorrow just a couple of blocks up Flatbush Avenue. The clean-lined store is putatively intended to serve the culinary needs of home cooks in search of high-end imports like Latini pasta and Italian apricot jam. That’s well and good, but not what will inspire trans-borough pilgrimages. What will do that, we’d wager, is the rotating roster of prepared foods, which can be packed to go (in biodegradable containers) or eaten on premises, if you’re able to snag one of the eight counter-height seats. This week’s starting lineup includes Greenmarket-direct veggies (a Franny’s forte) and the first-ever sandwiches with the Franny’s imprimatur.

Megumi Sasaki's inspiring documentary opens Friday, June 5 in New York at the Beekman Theatre and Cinema Village. HERB & DOROTHY tells the incredible true story of a postal worker and a librarian who built an enormous collection of contemporary art with modest means. In 1992, Herb and Dorothy Vogel donated over 4,000 works of art (amazingly crammed into their tiny Upper East Side apartment) to the National Gallery of Art. Vogel 50/50, the initiative to apportion the overflow of artworks among the fifty states, also kicks off this year. An Arthouse Films release.

David Byrne Office Tour

Here are the first two parts of a three part series from The FADER where multi-creative/Talking Heads guru David Byrne gives a tour of his studio! rad!

In our current issue, along with all of its other David Byrne-related wonder, you can see regular FADER contributor Jason Nocito's intimate photos of Byrne in his massive office at the Todo Mundo headquarters. Because of the natural constraints of paper magazines, we were neither able to fit every photo in the issue nor have Byrne explain what you were looking at. Fortunately, we have the internet, and Byrne was generous enough to record this guided audio tour of all the peculiar objects and ephemera photographed by Nocito that otherwise would've never been seen. We had so much material, and Byrne had so much to say, we've decided to split it into three parts.

Her first release - Pela'o - has been remixed by Crookers, and she is now working on a track with the Zombie Disco Squad so she clearly knows what she's doing!

Changing the Art on the White House Walls

The Obamas are sending ripples through the art world as they put the call out to museums, galleries and private collectors that they’d like to borrow modern art by African-American, Asian, Hispanic and female artists for the White House. In a sharp departure from the 19th-century still lifes, pastorals and portraits that dominate the White House’s public rooms, they are choosing bold, abstract art works.

The overhaul is an important event for the art market. The Obamas’ art choices could affect the market values of the works and artists they decide to display. Museums and collectors have been moving quickly to offer up works for inclusion in the iconic space.

Last week the first family installed seven works on loan from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington in the White House’s private residence, including “Sky Light” and “Watusi (Hard Edge),” a pair of blue and yellow abstracts by lesser-known African-American abstract artist Alma Thomas, acclaimed for her post-war paintings of geometric shapes in cheery colors.

The National Gallery of Art has loaned the family at least five works this year, including “Numerals, 0 through 9,” a lead relief sculpture by Jasper Johns, “Berkeley No. 52,” a splashy large-scale painting by Richard Diebenkorn, and a blood-red Edward Ruscha canvas featuring the words, “I think maybe I’ll…,” fitting for a president known for lengthy bouts of contemplation. The Jasper Johns sculpture was installed in the residence on Inauguration Day, along with modern works by Robert Rauschenberg and Louise Nevelson, also on loan from the National Gallery.

Collectors say the art picks by the Obamas will likely affect the artists’ market values—or at least raise their profiles. After George W. Bush displayed El Paso, Texas-born artist Tom Lea’s “Rio Grande,” a photorealistic view of a cactus set against gray clouds, in the Oval Office, the price of the artist’s paintings shot up roughly 300%, says Adair Margo, owner of an El Paso gallery that sells Mr. Lea’s work. (Mr. Lea passed away in 2001, which also boosted the value of his work.)

The Obamas’ interest in modern art began before they moved to Washington. The couple’s Hyde Park home featured modern art and black-and-white photographs, according to several Chicago friends. On one of their first dates, Mr. Obama took Michelle Robinson to the Art Institute of Chicago.

That's right, you read that correctly. Kombucha - Detox Summer

After a phenomenal weekend of backyard barbecue birthday blowouts, chicago house house parties, and rooftop sunsets you might feel the need for a little detox in your life...I know my Tuesday morning haze was enough indication that my liver might need a little break. What better time than to start a kombucha regiment than the first of summer?

Kombucha has seen a huge resurgence in the last couple of years but the fermented tea has been consumed for centuries by Chinese, Russian, and Eastern Europeans for its healing and digestive properties. Those in the new age/hippie dippy set are familiar with the beautifully packaged versions sold at high-end delis for $4.50 a bottle with names like Synergy and Wonder Drink but a quick google reveals that you can easily make and bottle this fizzy jam in the comfort of your own home! I started the process today with this quick recipe to make the "mother" culture and will be on my way to making my first batch of tea by next week! Check the starter recipe from Food Renegade below:
1 bottle of Organic, Raw Kombucha
1 glass jar
1 kitchen towel
1 cup of room temperature black tea sweetened with 1 tbsp sugar

Pour the bottle of kombucha and sweetened tea into a glass jar. Cover it with a towel so it can breathe but be protected from insects and other contaminants. Let it sit. With time, a new "mother" culture called a SCOBY will start to form on top of the liquid. It will appear first as a thin film, then slowly fill in and thicken up. Once it’s about 1/4 inch thick, it’s ready to go. You can let it sit longer and get even thicker. Should take 1.5-3 weeks depending on room temperature!

1st Asian American Comic Book

I found The Four Immigrants Manga on the sale rack of a Berkeley, CA bookstore. Published by Stone Bridge Press (specializing in "Quality Books about Asia"), the book is a translation of the first copyrighted Japanese-American comic book.

Henry Kiyama modeled his four characters on his own group of friends: Henry, an art student; Charlie, man-about-town; Frank, an entrepreneur; and Fred, a farmer. Kiyama covers "A Japanese Experience in San Francisco, 1904-1924" over 52 episodes consisting of 12 cells each. His fresh-off-the-boat heroes chase ambition, money and women...when they're not getting fired or drinking away their wages, they make fun of Chinese people and shoot the breeze about life.

Unemployed? Travel-bug bite you in the ass? Welcome to the new jet set.

WWOOF is an amazing international network of organic farms, smallholdings and gardeners that welcome volunteers to come through and work the farm, and in return, receive free room and board for the duration of their stay. Founded in 1971 when a London-based secretary "Sue Coppard, recognised the need to provide access to the countryside for people like herself who did not otherwise have the means or the opportunity, and who were keen to support the organic movement . Her idea started with a trial working weekend, which she arranged for four people at the bio- dynamic farm at Emerson College in Sussex through a contact in the Soil Association."

Green Chili Cornbread

Happy Memorial Day! Fire up the grill and ice the beers for the weekend. I typically smoke meat instead of grilling it but wanted to share a favorite recipe from my girl Paula Deen. Its super easy and a great compliment to bring or serve at a BBQ.

For those who are more ambitious, check the home smoking shenanigans from T Magazine and Kitchen 4B!

Ingredients:

* 1 1/4 cup stone-ground cornmeal
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 2 teaspoon baking powder
* 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
* 8 ounce can cream-style corn
* 1 cup sour cream
* 4 ounce can chopped green chilies
* 1/2 cup canola oil
* 2 eggs, lightly beaten


Directions:

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Spray miniature muffin tins with vegetable oil cooking spray.

In a small mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, salt and baking powder, stirring with a metal spoon. Add the cheese, corn, sour cream, and chilies. Stir until lightly combined. Add the oil and eggs and stir until everything is just combined; do not over mix. The batter will be very stiff.

Place about 1/2 tablespoon of batter into each muffin cup. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes. Serve warm.

My favorite? Offal of the Week, hands down. Definitely a great link for the blogroll!

Littlefield Sprouts in Gowanus

littlefield, a new eco-friendly performance and art space, opens this weekend in Brooklyn's Gowanus neighborhood! Housed in an old, 6200-square-foot warehouse, the venue uses green elements like a landscaped interior courtyard, soundwalls fromed from recycled rubber tires, a bar constructed from salvaged bowling alley lanes and energy supplied by the wind-powered grid. This year Washington DC-based percussion orchestra Farafina Kan—the "sound of Africa"—shares the history and spirit of West African music; New York group SeeWe African Dance Company uses African rhythms and instruments to enlighten audiences; Brooklyn-based Evidence, A Dance Company fuses traditional African dance with contemporary movements and spoken word; and the BAM/Restoration DanceAfrica Ensemble from Bed-Stuy performs for the thirteenth straight year at BAM. A Memorial Day weekend tradition, DanceAfrica is packed with dance, music, art, and film events—plus the one-and-only DanceAfrica outdoor bazaar.

TRUE, Twelve Years of Photography by Mike Schreiber exemplifies the image of some of the world’s top Hip Hop icons, placing forth a sense of reality that is often obscured through other forms of media. Additionally, Schreiber juxtaposes Hip Hop imagery with multi-cultural authenticity that he has captured during his travels. Earning a degree in Anthropology from the University of Connecticut, Schreiber is a self-taught photographer, who possesses an eye for unique and intriguing social situations. Having trekked the world, documenting his journeys, his socially conscious style adds an aesthetic, which is both gripping and provocative. His photography has been featured in publications such as Esquire, XXL, Vibe and many others.

Through his work with various Hip Hop artists, TRUE provides a means for individuals to emotionally connect with their heroes of Hip Hop culture. Schreiber’s ability to expose the rappers true identity sheds the pretense of expectation and replaces it with a raw interpretation of direct feelings. TRUE is the realism and expression that surrounds our daily lives.

Yesterday’s Loner: Steve McQueen

The Film Society of Lincoln Center presents Yesterday’s Loner: Steve McQueen, a 12-film program of the actor's best work, where he plays a doctor, convict, cop, gambler, robber, musician, mercenary, gunfighter, sailor, POW, firefighter and gentleman-thief. Whew...let me fan myself for a second...McQueen's rugged everyman, married with effortless sophistication, became an icon of masculinity in America and beyond.

McQueen, who never went gay or "full retard" (this was pre-1980s), was only nominated for an Oscar once. Ex-Marine, staunch Republican and noted pothead, he was also a pallbearer at the funeral of Bruce Lee and became an Evangelist later in life. He died in Mexico of cancer after three marriages. Cool!

Masters from the 1970s NYC graf movement (Blade, Crash, Daze, Jonone, Quik , Lee Quinones, Rammellzee, Sharp) and European art starts (Victor Ash, Banksy, Blek le Rat, Ikon, Sozy, Plateus) are among 20 painters, sculptors and photographers who’ve been working non-stop the last six months on new pieces for “Whole In The Wall: 1970 – Now”. It’s an unprecedented, museum-quality, 150-piece exploration of street art’s ongoing transition to, yes, fine art.

It’s not just the scale of the show that’s important. It’s presented in a lavish style only Europeans could pull off — with 17th Century antiques. This juxtaposition of authentic Luis XVI/XV furniture and crystal chandeliers in a two-story, 25,000-sf space on Manhattan’s industrial West Side puts the artists and their work in a setting Paris gallerists Chantal and Brigitte Helenbeck (Helenbeck Gallery) believe is simply approprié.

The fun-loving, art-loving sisters — identical twins no less — staged a similar show in Paris in November, in which ALL pieces sold (explaining why their artists have been so hard at work).

Legendary NYC graf photographers Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant will be among four photographers with featured works, including a new, 40-foot mural. This show also marks the 25th anniversary re-release of Cooper and Chalfant’s roundbreaking photo book of NYC transit masterpieces, “Subway Art.” Be on the look-out for updates, including previews of new works and video interviews, including exclusive clips with Cooper, Chalfant and other artists from this show.
